CMM Programmer/Dimensional Inspector
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Prototype Fabrication Division provides critical machining, fabrication, and precision dimensional inspection capabilities in support of the nation’s nuclear stockpile readiness mission. We are seeking a CMM Programmer/Dimensional Inspector to join the Dimensional Inspection Team. This position will be filled at either QA/QC Inspector 1 or QA/QC Inspector 2, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:
● QA/QC Inspector 1: $48,500 – $75,000
● QA/QC Inspector 2: $53,700 – $82,500
Responsibilities for QA/QC Inspector 1:
● Learn and apply fundamental dimensional inspection skills under close supervision
● Perform in-process and final inspections of machined components using basic inspection tools
● Use and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, specifications, and related documentation
● Apply basic shop mathematics, including English-to-metric conversions and trigonometry
● Work collaboratively within a team environment, following detailed instructions from senior inspectors
● Communicate inspection results through written documentation and verbal discussion
Additional Responsibilities for QA/QC Inspector 2:
● Perform high-accuracy, high-precision dimensional inspections on machined components of average complexity
● Conduct inspections using conventional tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gages, and thread gages
● Operate coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) by loading programs and executing inspections developed by senior inspectors
● Prepare inspection reports and communicate inspection results to machinists, engineers, and quality personnel
● Select appropriate inspection equipment based on drawing requirements
● Work with increased independence while continuing to collaborate within the inspection team
Qualifications
QA/QC Inspector 1:
● High School diploma or equivalent plus 1+ year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
● Basic knowledge/understanding of metrology and dimensional inspection methods as well as manufacturing techniques and blueprint interpretation, and an ability to learn and properly utilize manual inspection tools
● Proficiency with basic computer applications including MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook
● Strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated record of reliability and teamwork
● Willingness to work in a shop floor environment and with hazardous materials
QA/QC Inspector 2:
● High School diploma or equivalent plus 3+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
● Demonstrated experience performing dimensional inspections using manual inspection equipment
● Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
● Experience selecting appropriate inspection tools based on drawing requirements and operating CMMs following established inspection processes, including part fixturing and program execution
● Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work more independently
Desired Qualifications
● Experience with quality assurance activities in a manufacturing environment
● ASQ certifications such as CQE, CQI, or CQT
● Experience working with materials having radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, or other hazardous characteristics
