Metrology/Dimensional Inspection CMM Engineer
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Prototype Fabrication Division provides critical machining, fabrication, and precision dimensional inspection capabilities in support of the nation’s nuclear stockpile readiness mission. We are seeking a Metrology/Dimensional Inspection CMM Engineer to join the Applied Metrology Group. This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or R&D Engineer 2 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:
● R&D Engineer 1: $94,500 – $154,600
● R&D Engineer 2: $104,100 – $172,200
Responsibilities for R&D Engineer 1:
● Participate in design-for-manufacturability reviews to ensure dimensional inspection requirements are understood and achievable
● Validate, interpret, statistically analyze, and communicate high-fidelity dimensional inspection data to internal and external customers
● Identify inspection fixture needs and support the design, fabrication, and assembly of inspection fixtures
● Develop dimensional inspection processes to support prototype and production hardware
● Research and evaluate new inspection techniques, methods, and platforms to meet evolving customer requirements
● Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality professionals to ensure products meet technical and quality standards
Additional Responsibilities for R&D Engineer 2:
● Program, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs)
● Serve as a technical resource for advanced dimensional inspection methods and capability development
● Design, plan, and execute projects supporting dimensional inspection technologies and processes
● Provide technical consultation on manufacturability and inspection capability during product design and prototyping
● Lead projects of increased scope and complexity, including schedule, scope, and risk management
Qualifications
R&D Engineer 1:
● Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution plus 2+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
● Working knowledge of engineering practices supporting manufacturing and dimensional inspection environments
● General familiarity with dimensional inspection methods and equipment, including optical comparators, height gages, micrometers, calipers, indicators, surface roughness measurement, gauge blocks, and pins
● Working knowledge of CAD software such as Creo, SolidWorks, NX, Catia, or Inventor
● Knowledge of project management fundamentals for technical work, including managing scope, schedule, and priorities
● Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to independently prepare and present technical data and reports
● Demonstrated record of reliability, teamwork, and commitment to organizational goals
R&D Engineer 2:
● Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution plus 4+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
● Advanced working knowledge supporting dimensional inspection of products meeting defined technical and quality requirements
● Demonstrated experience designing, planning, and executing dimensional inspection projects, and experience programming, calibrating, and repairing CMMs
● Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), sufficient to advise on manufacturability and inspection capability during design and prototyping
● Demonstrated ability to manage projects of advanced scope and complexity while meeting schedule and performance objectives
Desired Qualifications
● Experience supporting R&D inspection operations within a complex manufacturing environment
● Experience with CMM programming software such as QUINDOS, Calypso, PC-DMIS, or PolyWorks
● Knowledge of or certification in Quality Engineering, Statistical Process Control (SPC), or Lean/Six Sigma methodologies
● Experience collecting and analyzing ISO 10360 calibration data for equipment monitoring and preventative maintenance
● Experience working with materials having radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, or other hazardous characteristics
