Metrology R&D Engineer

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Prototype Fabrication Division provides critical machining, fabrication, and precision dimensional inspection capabilities in support of the nation’s nuclear stockpile readiness mission. We are seeking a Metrology R&D Engineer to join the Applied Metrology Group. This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or R&D Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:

●       R&D Engineer 3: $125,200 – $211,300

●       R&D Engineer 4: $150,300 – $260,800

Responsibilities for R&D Engineer 3:

●       Participate in design-for-manufacturability reviews to ensure dimensional inspection requirements are understood and achievable

●       Validate, interpret, statistically analyze, and communicate high-fidelity dimensional inspection data to internal and external customers

●       Design or facilitate the design of inspection holding fixtures and develop robust inspection processes

●       Develop and maintain Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) programs to support prototype and production hardware

●       Research and implement new inspection techniques, methods, and platforms to meet evolving customer requirements

●       Collaborate across the manufacturing enterprise, including R&D, production, quality assurance, management, and customers

Additional Responsibilities for R&D Engineer 4:

●       Provide technical leadership for applied metrology capabilities, with emphasis on the operability, maintainability, and capability of ultra-high precision CMMs

●       Lead maintenance and sustainment of CMM capabilities in accordance with the Prototype Fabrication Engineering User Performed Calibration Plan

●       Develop and lead strategic initiatives to advance divisional metrology capabilities and long-term technical objectives

●       Serve as a senior technical authority and consultant for dimensional inspection, GD&T, and metrology best practices

●       Mentor and train engineers and inspectors, building depth and resilience within the metrology workforce

Qualifications

R&D Engineer 3:

●       Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution plus 6+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

●       Expert-level knowledge supporting dimensional inspection of products meeting defined technical and quality requirements

●       Advanced knowledge applying engineering practices and principles within manufacturing and dimensional inspection environments

●       Advanced proficiency with CAD software such as Creo, SolidWorks, NX, Catia, or Inventor, and advanced proficiency with CMM programming software including QUINDOS, Calypso, PC-DMIS, or PolyWorks

●       Advanced knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), sufficient to consult on manufacturability and inspection capability during design and prototyping

●       Advanced project management experience, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management for complex technical efforts

●       Expert written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical data to peers, management, and customers

●       Demonstrated experience mentoring and training engineers and inspectors

R&D Engineer 4:

●       Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution plus 12+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

●       Expert-level experience with ultra-high precision CMMs, including capability development, sustainment, and performance optimization

●       Expert proficiency with CMM programming software such as QUINDOS, Calypso, PC-DMIS, or PolyWorks

●       Expert-level knowledge of GD&T, serving as an authority on dimensional requirements and inspection strategy

●       Demonstrated experience developing strategic metrology plans and leading the implementation of major technical initiatives

●       Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex projects and influence technical direction at the divisional level

Desired Qualifications

●       Knowledge of Weapons Production and familiarity with NAP 401.1, Weapon Quality Policy

●       Experience collecting and analyzing ISO 10360 calibration data for equipment monitoring and preventative maintenance

●       Knowledge of or certification in Quality Engineering, Statistical Process Control (SPC), or Lean/Six Sigma methodologies

●       Experience creating and correcting CMM error maps

●       Contributions to professional societies, technical publications, or external research collaborations
