NDT Resume Tips: What to Include Before You Apply

Your NDT resume should make it easy for an employer to understand your qualifications, inspection experience, and availability. Before applying for your next nondestructive testing job, check that your resume answers these practical questions.

What methods and qualifications do you have?

Create a clearly labeled section for your NDT methods and credentials. Include the applicable level, issuing organization or employer, and current status. Distinguish completed training from certification, and label previous or expired credentials accurately.

Write out method names with their abbreviations, such as ultrasonic testing (UT) or magnetic particle testing (MT). Match terminology in the job posting when it accurately describes your background.

ASNT’s resume guidance also recommends using relevant job-posting keywords and clearly describing your work history.

Where have you applied your skills?

Go beyond listing a job title. Describe the materials, components, and work environments you have inspected.

For example, a statement such as “Performed magnetic particle testing on welds and documented results under approved procedures” gives a clearer picture than “Responsible for inspections.” Use examples that accurately reflect your own responsibilities.

Include relevant industry experience, such as aerospace manufacturing, fabrication, plant maintenance, or pipeline work.

What equipment and reporting tools can you use?

List equipment, inspection software, and reporting systems you have actually used. Explain your responsibilities where helpful, including setup, data collection, interpretation, or report preparation.

Keep introductory exposure separate from work you have performed independently.

What kind of position are you seeking?

Help employers understand your preferences by noting:

• Your location and willingness to relocate.
• Travel availability.
• Interest in contract or direct-hire work.
• Shift preferences and potential start date.

These details can help both sides identify a suitable opportunity earlier.
