Dimensional Metrology Engineering Technologist (CMM Expert)
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Prototype Fabrication Applied Metrology (PF-AM) group provides essential technical expertise in precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware supporting the nation’s nuclear stockpile readiness. We are seeking a highly skilled Dimensional Metrology Engineering Technologist to join our team. This is an onsite position in Los Alamos, NM, with a salary range of $104,100 – $172,200.
You will:
● Participate in Design for Manufacturability (DfM) Reviews, ensuring dimensional inspection requirements are achievable and selecting appropriate Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) based on the required Total Uncertainty Ratio (TUR)
● Perform precise dimensional inspections and verify compliance with design specifications for critical components and assemblies
● Write optimized, user-friendly Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) programs and provide technical support to both internal and external customers
● Collaborate with engineers and machinists to strengthen the team’s capabilities in high-precision measurement and M&TE usage
● Mentor less experienced team members, fostering a collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment focused on technical excellence
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field
● 8+ years of directly related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
● Expert knowledge in programming, operating, and calibrating CMMs using software such as QUINDOS, PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, or Calypso
● Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and its application in high-precision manufacturing environments
● Advanced proficiency with NIST-traceable M&TE, including surface roughness testers, shadow graphs, and density determination stations, with knowledge of ISO/ASME standards
● Ability to obtain a DOE “Q” Clearance (U.S. Citizenship is typically required)
